What is your “Big Why?”
Do you have one?
Do your goals, both small and big, short-term and long-term, align with your Big Why?
As I sit here on the beautiful beach in Maui, at The Westin Resort and Spa, I am contemplating these questions more than ever. Specifically, I am re-evaluating whether my goals are in-line with why I am striving to hit those goals.
It started when I was young. Most kids love playing in the snow. They love getting days off of school because of the bad weather. Me? While I liked playing in the snow for a little while with my friends, I hated the cold. I hated the idea of losing a day of school, because I knew if we lost too many days, my summer vacation would be shortened.
I have never been a fan of the Winter. So you may be saying to yourself, as an adult, why don’t I just move somewhere warm all year round?
Well, it’s a little more complicated than that. I am also extremely close to my family. They live in the North East, and I want to make sure I have a home base in that general vicinity so that we can still spend a fair amount of time together.
There is also another, more selfish reason as well. You see, this very location is “my reason.” My ultimate result, if you will. Not necessarily Maui, or even Hawaii for that matter. For me, it is the conviction that I want to have a location independent lifestyle. I want the ability to pick an area on the map, and decide to go live there for as short or as long a period of time as I choose.
When I first started at Keller Williams Real Estate, my productivity coach asked me if I knew what my Big Why was at that time. I was married, and my initial reaction was I am doing this for my family, to provide a phenomenal future for them.
But that was not an authentic answer. Sure, providing for my family is part of my being. But it is not my Big Why. After digging down deep and asking a lot of questions, my pro coach got it out of me. I have always wanted that location independent lifestyle. I have always wanted to run my business via a phone and laptop from anywhere in the world.
Now real estate sales is not conducive to that lifestyle unless you attack it with that singular purpose, and find a way to make it work. Keller Williams is pioneering the expansion model, which is one way in which you can achieve a location independent business while still being involved in real estate sales. Also, you can build a team and take it to the 7th level, in which you act as the CEO and work on your business, not in it. This is the path we are on with The Cindy Wadsworth Team.
Another avenue to achieve my Big Why is this website, successfulrealestatecareers.com. I am growing my consulting and coaching business, as well as my profit share in Keller Williams through this site. I am also sharing information and creating courses for agents who want to take their businesses to the next level. I get to do what comes naturally to me….I get to help people. AND I can do it from anywhere in the world.
One of my mentors, Rock Thomas, has a saying: “Say YES, and figure it out later.” Having Rock as an inspiration in my life is one of the reasons why I created this site. He tells us if we want something bad enough, we can make it happen.
Well I want that location independent lifestyle badly. I want it more so than anything else other than the health of my family and loved ones. Failing is not an option. Coming up short won’t happen.
This is why I have focused all my energy on my Big Why. This is why I have aligned my goals towards accomplishing my end result. But if I don’t put a date on it, then it’s not a true goal. So for me, I will be completely location independent by January 1st, 2021.
This is my Big Why. It is what gets me out of bed every morning, pumped to start my day. If you aren’t waking up with that same kind of energy, then maybe your goals aren’t aligned with your ultimate vision. Maybe you haven’t yet figured out your Big Why. Perhaps you aren’t doing what your passionate about?
I am challenging you to tell us below what your Big Why is. Once you declare it to the world, you have a much better chance of following through and succeeding on your journey.
